This Magnificent Cake! (Ce Magnifique Gâteau !) by Marc James Roels & Emma De Swaef and III by Marta Pajek will premiere in Cannes.
III by Marta Pajek will compete for Palme d’Or in the official competition of Cannes Film Festival as one of only 8 selected shorts (and the only animation in the line-up). The film tells a story of a middle-aged woman and a man meeting in a waiting room. He helps her to take off her heavy black fur coat, which turns out to be her only clothing. That’s how their mutual game begins, based on alternately seducing and exposing each other. III is a portrait of a woman in an uneasy and exhausting relationship with a man which both attracts and repels them in equal measure. The film is the third part of the tryptych Impossible Figures and Other Stories. The film was produced by Warsaw-based Animoon.
This Magnificent Cake! is Emma & Marc follow-up on their festival hit (Oh Willy…). The film will have its World Premiere on a 50th anniversary screening of Director’s Fortnight and will be a part of short film competition of the side-bar section.
Set in colonial Africa in the late 19th century, This Magnificent Cake! tells the stories of five different characters: a troubled king; a middle-aged pygmy working in a luxury hotel; a failed businessman on an expedition; a lost porter; and a young army deserter. The film is produced by Beast Animation (Belgium) in co-production with Vivement Lundi (France) and Pedri Animation (The Netherlands). Read more about the film at CartoonBrew.
